But... is it possible to build a laptop? and have it be completely customizable? Like my sick gaming rig I build thanks to Rob and this website.

If not.. well I am looking for some guidance..

I love music, love to record, have so much music on my old computer and figure i need a powerful processor, a decent graphics card, a large harddrive and all of this under 1,000. Guess I'll need a good case to... anyone know a case that works well in a small work space? would a small little box one be good?

The closest you can get to building a laptop is customizing it with Dell, or someone like that. Unless you are willing to take it apart - then you can change the memory, HD and the DVD/CD drive.

The small box cases are quite popular at the moment, but you will have to compromise in performance as you will need a special motherboard. Also, you won't be able to put in as many HDs as you may need, or have a really powerful GFX card.
