Upgrading RAM for the First Time

I'm going to buy some RAM soon, and I need some help figuring out what is compatible with my PC. I have a Compaq Presario (model SR1711NX) with 2x256MB (what brand etc, I'm not sure) and I'm thinking 2 or 3GB is ideal. Anyways, I'm on a serious budget (I can buy cheap RAM or none at all), and I want to know if Kingston 512MB DDR400 SDRAM (http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-DDR400-KVR400X64C25-512/dp/B00007L3NJ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197684826&sr=1-2) would work on my PC.

I suggest using Crucial memory. Personally I prefer it over Kingston. I have their Memory Advisor on this page.

I've already been to Crucial's site, but I can't buy from there because I don't have a credit card or a bank account. That's why I'd like to buy cheap Kingston RAM from Amazon, because they accept money orders. The page you linked to said that Kingston has a good reputation, which I've heard before.

Is there any way that somebody could tell me if that specific RAM (that I linked to) would be compatible with my PC? :confused: Sorry to be a bother, I'm just new at this and fairly confused.
