Any suggestions as to the likely cause of these symptoms?

- switch on UPS (or wall socket)
- press power-on switch on front of PC case
- nothing happens - total silence
- open case: there is a light on a diode on the motherboard, so some
juice must be getting that far
- switch off PC by holding down front power switch - motherboard light
goes off
- switch back on - motherboard light comes on
- no clues from the power supply, since it is fanless
- leave it in disgust while I go for a job interview
- come back, have a cup of tea, then several hours after last touching
it, and with no-one near it, the PC springs to life, boots normally and
has now been up for 5 hours
- this has happened 2 days running

I haven't tested the CMOS battery (haven't tested anything, actually) -
could that be a possibility? Or maybe gremlins really exist?

humbly,

Wow, that's really interesting. I would guess there's a short somewhere. My guess is you could use a new power supply. It sounds like this might be an older computer. I haven't seen a power supply without a fan in a while.
