Hi all, long time reader but first time poster. My wife and I are planning on buildin a computer soon. We got most of the parts figured out but am a bit confused as to how much watts we need in a PSU and what are good, inexpensive brands to look into.

Our specs for the pc are:
-Q6600
-2 GB of Corsair RAM
-Geforce 8800GT
-1 DVD drive
-1 DVD-RW drive

Any help with the PSU would be great. Thanks in advance!

^ and the point of this was?

For that setup, you should be looking at around 600W. Jamie always recommends the Corsair HX520, which is a very good PSU, but I have always bought Antec, and they are very good. Just avoid the Earthwatts range, and you should be fine.

Be prepared to spend some money on a good PSU, as it is the most important thing in your computer. :)

Thanks guys. I'll be on the lookout for deals on Antec or Corsair PSUs.

The reviews I've seen of EarthWatts seem favorable, such as this one, and by no means one to avoid.

It may not look sexy, but really, could you care less about that?

Good PSU when/if they work.

Look out for Hiper as well, newegg have some good deals on them, go for the 580w version.

After all that I actually went with the OCZ GameXStream 700W. Found some good reviews of it and Newegg had a good deal on it.

Where exactly are people getting information that there are problems with the Earthwatts? I'd really like to know.

I've just had a few bad experiences with them in the past, they may have sorted it out now. :)

Same here, i have had three of the buggers, one took down my whole system!!

Oh and btw, the OCZ isn't as good as the Corsair HX520 and it costs the same XD.
