I've been shopping for computer parts, primarily using the recommendations from mysuperpc.com. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the MSI K9N Platinum SLI motherboard, and was planning on getting 2GB of PC2-8500 1066Mhz DDR2 ram recommended on the website, but when I look at MSI's website, it doesn't list 1066Mhz ram as being compatible with that board. Does anyone know for sure whether that ram is compatible with that motherboard?

Thanks in advance.

The MSI only supports DDR2 800 aka PC-6400.

Crucial lists their PC2-8500 RAM as being compatible with the MSI K9N Platinum SLI.

The PC2-8500 RAM is compatible with the motherboard, but it will only run at 6400 speeds i.e. you can still use it, but it won't be any faster than some PC2-6400.

Yeah you can use the Ram in that motherboard but because the motherboard only supports speeds of 800Mhz or less it will only run at that speed, so spending the extra is pretty pointless.

There is the probable advantage of being able to re-use the PC2-8500 RAM in your next computer. Which could either be a DDR2 motherboard that will take better advantage of the type of RAM, or a DDR3 motherboard that also accepts DDR2 RAM. When DDR3 motherboards become available, DDR2 RAM will still be the way to go because it will be faster and cheaper. The price diffence between the PC2-6400 and PC2-8500 memory modules I recommend is fairly small, and RAM prices are incredibly cheap at the moment, so it may be a good idea to pay a little more now and get the better RAM while its cheap.

Yeah that is true, but in 6 months time DDR3 will be really cheap as well, its neverending lol.

We've really caught a break at the moment with RAM because production was cranked up in anticipation of Windows Vista catching on - and new OS's always need more memory. But Windows Vista is not so compelling and many are choosing Windows XP. In fact, Dell is once again offering Windows XP.
