When I assembled my PC I had a friend put on arctic 5 in place of the stock thermal compound on the CPU (E6750). Being only familiar with old processors he spread a thin layer of the compound over the entire surface (smoothed with a credit card). I saw on the ArcticSilver website that for a duo only a small line of compound should be placed on the center of the chip. Would covering the entire surface with a thin layer of compound be a bad thing for temps?

What are your temps????

I prefer to use a small line, the chip itself is tiny only about 2cm x 2cm and the rest of the top of the chip is the heatspreader.

Remember that when the cooler goes on all the AS5 will spread as its under the weight.

I doubt its a bad thing as long as it was only a thin layer and it wasn't layed on thick like when your buttering bread lol ;)

No, it wasn't put on thick.

My temps are fine for stock cooling, I guess. Idle ~35-37C. Prime95 load ~60-61C max in a 70F room. This is using CoreTemp and Speedfan.

Hey Jamie I had problems with my temps the first time i played a game idle was about 40C and load went above 65C, So I went to RadioShak and bought some of the artic silver 5 and used just the one strip like they call for on the website and now temps at idle are 26-28C and full load 40C tops. The stuff works, better than the crap that came on the heat sink of the E6750. Room is between 70 and 77F.

Jason i reckon you should get one, really cheap cooler and yet its one of the best.

To put it into perspective of how good they are i overclocked my old E6400 from 2.13 GHz to 3.1GHz, idle temps 27~29 DegC, under Orthos load for 6 hours temps were 40~45 DegC.

I am considering getting a cooler so that I can overclock some, and I've been looking at different models such as the Tuniq Tower 120 and the Thermalright Ultima 90. The P5N-E board has such as large northbridge heatsink that some of the aftermarket coolers interfere with it. That's something I've got to keep in mind if I buy one.

That is very true i had trouble getting my Freezer on.

The best air cooler is the Tuniq tower but it is very pricey.

You could invest in water cooling, expensive but worth every penny :D

I've got the Arctic Freezer 7 with my E6750 oced to 3.2GHz, and it idles at 18C. :D

Sorry the CPU idles between 30C and 32C and full load was 40C other was mobo my bad, and no, it is the cooler that came with the E6750 processor, just cleaned off the old thermal paste/tape and put on the artic silver5. May be cause of the antec 900 case?

The stock Intel cooler is very good, plus the case keeps things cool. :)
