My needs are simple and I really dont need to build a "super" PC. I just want to listen to tunes/surf/ and check out some vids once in awhile. No gaming, just current and fast. My system is currently so very outdated and extremely small. (128mg ram/11gig HD Win98...hey, It was free). Win98 is not cutting it any longer as I have (Or time has) sucked the life out of this beige paperweight.
My thoughts are maybe something cheap to let me ride out a couple years seeing xp surely will be nonsupported by then and the tech will be whatever.
I kinda cant see spending much on something that has the shelf life as a loaf of bread.
But I dont want a Dell or Box store junk either.

What is your budget? Jamie has created a few basic rigs for people... can't find the threads though... XD

As WM said, whats your budget mate?

I priced a computer for a high school teacher a few weeks ago, and the thread has vanished off the forum

Anyway i still remember the parts, i priced him a really good computer that would easily be able to use Vista and XP, it had a decent CPU and 2GB of Ram and a 160GB Harddrive.

If my memory serves it was $260 for all the parts from newegg including everything except monitor, keyboard ect.

Let me know if you want me to do the same for you.

Here is the teacher computer forum post that uses a amd cpu:
Teacher Post (http://forums.mysuperpc.com/showthread.php?t=558)
Here is a computer Jamie priced for my dad who will only use the computer the same way you plan to. This is a pentium core 2 duo specs:
Core 2 Duo Specs (http://forums.mysuperpc.com/showthread.php?t=572)

Here is what I ended up getting for my dad's computer after talking back and forth with him:
ASUS P5N-E SLI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131142&Tpk=N82E16813131142) $119
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145590) $84($30 rebate comes with it :D)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Allendale 2.2GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115031) $144.99 (dad wanted to pay a little extra for more power but you could save a little and go with a 2.0)
SONY Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16821103116) $7.99 (dad wanted, he still has a work camera that puts pictures on disk )
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136074) $74.99 (again you could save some money getting smaller hard drive if you want but the hard drive we where going to get was 250gb and for $5 more we got 320gb so we got the extra space)
IDE Lightscribe DVD Burner (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136118) $29.99 (We plan to use his other burner also from is old computer)
Atech Flash Xm-4U 11-in-1 USB 2.0 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820176825) $19.99 (dad wanted for his camera memory stick)
XFX GeForce 7300 GT (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3241588&CatId=1558) $79.99 (comes with $30 rebate and dad didn't need a powerful graphics card but this card will do the job)
Ultra Grid Clear Side ATX Case W/700w Ultra X-Connect V-Series (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2974454&CatId=2533) $99.99 (case comes with a nice power supply, Plan to try the included psu and if it doesn't work we have a spare antec psu that we can use)

All that comes to I believe $669 with shipping and handling but you will get $50 back from rebates. You would still have to buy window xp or vista so you would have to add that in as we already have the xp disk. The computer parts are a little more than what my dad really needs but he wanted speed, and had the finally say in what parts to use since he is the one buying the parts :p I'm sure you could get the price lower and Jamie Nixx can help you lower the price. Working with Jamie Nixx the computer started around $500 for a core 2 duo and it was a nice computer but ended up being about $600 after rebates because dad wanted certain things like two 3.5" exterior bays on the computer case and thats hard to find. So price can be cheap but also have to look at your needs and wants.
If you can wait about a week I should have my dad's computer done and let you know what I think of the parts and I could take pictures. I should get the case tomorrow and hope to have the computer built this weekend.

Cheers for posting them acidfire.

Dan, if your needs are only simple, word processing, browsing the internet ect. The one i priced for Mike( teacher) will be more than adequate for your needs, and it will be fast with a lot of storage, imo better than the run of the mill Dell computers and a fraction of the cost.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for all your input. I can live with $600 +/-. Actually I would have no problem with Robs $1000 rig. I just feel that its a waste of a good rig in my hands doing simple stuff. (You know what I mean?) I would think a quality non-gaming rig could be had for lessor moneys. Quiet(living room rig)fast and storage(mp3 & some photo/camera). I have a flat panel, so what I would need would be a case and just about everything in it including new keyboard/mouse.

Or is it just my uncertanity and lack of computer savvy holding me back and I should just buck-up and slide into a "ROB" like rig? :D
Thanks for posting the link again 'cid

Again thank's for your opinions, cheers:cool:

I think that the rig that acid posted will be perfect for you - good performance for a reasonable price.

The PC that Rob suggested is a "super PC" - it is intended for very demanding use. As such, it is kinda pointless if you spend the extra money if you don't really need it.
