Hello,

I tried posting this message before but I don't see it on the board now, so I'm going to try to repost.

I'm trying to set up a computer building class in at my school. I priced out the PC built on the site and it turned out to be about 1000+ dollars. Do you think I could design a computer that could cost me more like 700 per unit that would still run XP and possibly vista?

Thanks Mike

Here is your thread mate :)

I could easily price a computer for you that would run XP, Vista would be more expensive as you need a lot of ram.

I reckon i could price a decent little computer together that would cost around $500, Rob's pc costs over a $1000+ because it is a state of the art machine, capable of playing the latest games and running the latest applications.

Let me know if you want me to price a comp for you...

Hi Jamie,

That would be great! I'm looking to build them for about that price. If I could do it than the students could work in teams and build about 10 of them.

Thanks for replying. Mike

I have decided to choose an AMD setup for you, as a Core 2 Duo setup could be more expensive although if you prefer i can do a core 2 duo setup.

CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819104317

For the CPU i have chosen you a socket AM2 Sempron 2GHz processor, this is an excellent little CPU and it is very energy efficient, and it runs very cool, so should you wish to teach your class how to overclock its a good overclocker :D. I had the 3000 version on socket 754 a couple of years ago and it was excellent.

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186126

For the motherboard i have chosen you a Foxconn micro ATX mobo, it is a very nice little board and very good value for money, it also supports DDR2 800 memory which is a bonus, this motherboard has all the latest expansion slots, but, it has an intergrated GPU chipset, which means it doesn't require a Graphics card, although you can add one if you want. This motherboard is also Vista ready :D

Ram (2GB)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161172

For the Ram i have chosen Wintec ampo and 2GB of the stuff, for the price there is nothing better and some of my American buds swear by it, its very hardy and very stable and excellent value for money.

Harddrive (IDE)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148212

The Seagate barracuda is one of the best makes of HD available, this is 160GB but they do a 40GB and an 80GB version should you wish to downsize. It also comes with 5 year warranty.

Case (comes with a 350w PSU)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147010

Now on the case front, i am not a fan of generic PSU's AKA the ones that come with cases pre-installed, but in your case it would be ok as you are not trying to run a super duper gaming beast :D so the 350w psu that comes with that case should power the rig nicely.

I have left out the optical drive and the floppy, as you can easily choose these yourself as i don't know what types you require i.e DVD, CD, rewritable ect.

The final price for this setup minus optical drives and floppy is $249.96.

Add the floppy and optical drive and your looking at $260.

That is a saving on your initial price of $700 of $440.

This computer will also run windows Vista.

Hope this helps mate and tell me if you would want a dual core CPU instead of the Sempron or require a Graphics card instead of the chipset.

P.s Please do not be fooled by the price, i have built an infinate number of similar pc's for friends and last year i even built one to the exact same spec as that for my school science teacher and he was shocked at how good it was.

:)
