Hello
My first time here. Hello to all.
I am looking to build my own PC. I found "My Super PC" web site. And in an effort to save a few dollars I had a question. Would, could this system work if (1) the video card installed was a Radeon x1550 instead of the MSI GeForce GTX 660 2GB DDR5 AND (2) the hard drive installed was a WD3200AAJB (pata 8MB cache)?
Any help is appreciated,

Mike

Hi mikeo56, Welcome to the forums,

Let's talk about the hard drive first, and, I do not recommend use of a pata drive at all. Here is the url from Rob's My Super PC narrative: http://www.mysuperpc.com/harddrive.shtml His discussion is mainly about SATA hard drives; however, he does include pluses and minuses of PATA drives, I think he means to 'cover the waterfront from a descriptive viewpoint regards 'available hard drives'; he also refers to PATA drives as 'older technology' in effect.

I have been reading this forum since I built my first computer in mid 2008 I believe, and I have yet to see anyone use a PATA hard drive. One reason is that motherboards that we see on this forum do not include support for PATA drives. Here is a url for a current Gigabyte motherboard http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4139#sp Click on the url, choose 'specification' and then scroll down close to the bottom of the page where you will see 'Internal I/O Connectors' and 'Back Panel Connectors'. Note that you see only SATA used in this specification; but this is all we ever see, Sata only!

Regards the video card, here is one URL from 2007, on the X1550 card: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_ati_radeon_x1550_/ It is way out of date to consider its use (my opinion).
(Gotta run right now, I will add more comments in an hour or two)

It is a old card with only 'Four pixel shader processors and Two vertex shader processors' -- this from the X1550 url just above. By contrast, the MSI GeForce GTX 660 specs are at this URL: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_660_twinfrozr_iii_review,5.html - Note that the MSI card has 960 shader processors -- a huge difference between 'todays' video cards and what was made back in 2007.

The difference between the two cards above is current technology versus very old (video card beginning technology). There is no comparison. Hope this helps. Do not hesitate to ask questions.

Thanks zburns
I was just wondering. I happen to have an unopened WD drive and a radeon. If they don't work, they don't work.
