Some store across the street is selling part of a system which consists of almost everything I want to upgrade. Now, whether or not it's something I want to upgrade to is another matter. It's going for 400$. I've tried to price everything and this is what I got:
Intel E5800 (http://ark.intel.com/products/42802/Intel-Pentium-Processor-E5800-%282M-Cache-3_20-GHz-800-MHz-FSB%29) Dual Core: 80$
22x DVD-RW IDE, Dual layer LG-H22NP20 (http://www.123inkcartridges.ca/computer-and-part/DDD_LG_H22NP20.html): seemingly 40$
WD500GB 3.5" SATA 3 15 Mb 7200RPM WD-4000AAKX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769) 80$ (and seems to xfer at 6Gbps while a 40$ cousin only does 600Mbps)
ASUS P5G41-M (http://www.a-power.com/product-16951) which has 2 PCI, 1 PCI-E X16 1 PCI-E 1X: 70$ (appears to be a little old. I also won't be using the on-board VGA or sound)
Kingston KVR800D2N5/2G (http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KVR800D2N5_2G.pdf) DDR2-800 non-ECC: 25$ (sometimes called "value" memory when I Google it)

It also comes with a micro ATX case and 350W power supply (I wonder if my current 300W supply will do). All this appears to be worth nearly 400$. Some of it also seems a bit old, though, like he's trying to push his old stock off on me. What do you think?

Basically, you're right. It's not junk, but it's hardware that's at least 2 generations old.

That seems to be what I'm hearing. Right now I've got my eyes on an AMD Athlon II X4 610e, but having a hard time finding a compatible mobo for it.

Wouldn't a Phenom II X4 965 be a better deal?

What are you planning to do with your system? What components do you have currently? $400 can be better spent IMO.

If you aren't a hardcore gamer or on a budget, you can check out AMD's APU line. The A6 (Quad Core) is about ~$115 and has a pretty decent integrated graphics. I bult a similar system for my dad for about +/- $400.

Funny you should say that. Someone else put me onto the Phenom II X4 955. The reason I liked the 610e is that it has a very good idle power consumption and the reviews were favourable.
The gaming I'm doing isn't hardcore, but I hate spending money unnecessarily. I'm looking at reviews for the A6 and find them confusing. The power consumption stats seem suspiciously low, but perhaps those are for the laptops.
