I note that there seem to be no threads dealing with the first installation of software on a new build. Nothing about separating the OS and programs/data; Nothing about additional partitions for other OS's; Nothing about MB driver installation. Is this a taboo topic or have I missed the appropriate faq? Here is a question of immediate interest. If I have both XP pro and W7 in different partitions on the same disk, will I need a separate antivirus suite for each partition?

I'm not sure why there's not many threads about software installation. As long as we respect software and copyright licenses, I don't see anything being taboo, except for people coming here just to advertise some kind of software.
For me, on a new install I always load the following software.
Microsoft Security Essentials
Malewarebytes
Adobe Reader
Chrome
Open Office
IsoBurn
Gimp
There are more depending on the user, but these are the basics.

RickyTick, I noticed you didn't mention a Firewall in your list. Do you just use the Firewall that comes with the OS?
Thanks

Good point Mike. You're right, I always use Windows firewall.
