How to get thermal compound to flow out of syringe?

I'm at the point in my second computer build where I'm ready to apply thermal compound and secure the CPU heatsink.

I have the Noctua NT-H1 thermal compound but I can't figure out how to get it out of the syringe. The syringe handle won't press downward; nothing comes out at the tip. I tried inserting a needle into the tip but it doesn't pierce anything.

Had to use Arctic Silver 5 instead - ran out to Radio Shack. Never figured out why the tube of Noctua NT-H1 supplied with its heatsink wouldn't produce anything.
