CD Drive or burner

I have been told that a CD DVD Burner can cause the disks to scratch. How do you know if it is causing the problem or not. I can't install my OS because I keep getting error messages saying I have missing files and catalogs. I have Win XP2. I think it is the OS itself. Maybe corrupt. So I am thinking of getting Windows 7, since it is a fairly new OS, I figure I can get newer drivers I may need for better performance. But if my CD Burner is scratching the disks then I am just crapping in the wind; sort of!

If it's causing scratches, then it's defective. There's nothing normal about a drive causing scratches.

Where did you get the XP disc that you're trying to install?
