Currently I'm using a Toshiba A135-S7406 with the specifications shown here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a135-s7406/1707-3121_7-33016428.html

According to this wikipedia article, the chipset it comes with supports up to Pentium Dual Core processors.

So I know virtually nothing about upgrading and working on my own computer but have a friend who could install a new CPU if I ordered one. Is there anything preventing me from getting something like a T7200 or T7400?

Welcome to the forums. :)

It is much harder to change a CPU in a laptop, but it is possible. You will need to take everything apart and then put it back again in the correct order. The smaller size is an issue too, as it is all about heat dissipation, and if you get that wrong then you will ruin the laptop. The Celeron Ms run a lot cooler than the Core 2s, so that might be an issue.

This PCWorld article is fairly good, and runs through the process. If you want a challenge, then check it out:
