My new Super PC, Supercom, was born today at 4:00 PM PDT. It is alive and running well. The only software installed is W7, but there is a lot more to come. I played a game of solitaire (and won) to initiate its arrival. Birth announcements have been sent out and a celebration will be held tonight at the place of birth. Ice cream and cake will be served. Here are the stats:

Motherboard = GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD4P
CPU = Intel Quad-Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W
Video card = EVGA GeForce GTX260 Core 216 896MB DDR3 PCI-Express 2.0
PSU = CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V
RAM = Crucial Ballistix 2 GB DDR3
OS = Windows 7 home premium 64-bit builders pack
HDD = Western Digital 1000GB 7200rpm SATA WD1001FALS
CD/DVD = Sony 24x DVD RW, AD-7240S-0B

In addition to the above new parts, I am using on-hand parts as follows:

Microsoft wireless optical mouse and keyboard
dual speakers
2 wide-screen HD 22-inch LCD monitors (soon to be expanded to 4)
full tower case with a pull-out drawer for mounting the motherboard.

I had some trouble with the first boot. That turned out to be a faulty motherboard and CPU which I RMA'd. The replacements worked correctly. I also had some trouble obtaining a bootable CD for testing my new HDD. I finally discovered that I could create one of these on my laptop that has Windows Vista.

I have one suggestion: "Use the safe BIOS settings until the machine is up and running with the OS and main device drivers installed". The BIOS can be tweaked after that.

I want to thank Rob for his guidance and those who responded when I had troubles.
