First build.
All that came with my Sony Optiarc x18 q170a (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827131038) was a plastic bag and some styrofoam popcorn. I was surprised to see this, but kicked myself when I noticed that I bought it OEM. What cables do I need to connect this device?

Also, how bad of an idea is it to purchase my harddrive (hitachi deskstar 320 gig, 16 mb cache) OEM, I noticed that I did this as well.

I believe what happened is, I had these items on my wishlist for about 2 weeks while I researched and at the time, I didn't know what OEM meant!

Nowadays almost all DVD Rom/writers ect are OEM and the HD also.

You already answered your own question in the title. If you are talking about connecting this to your motherboard you will need an IDE cable, try and get a rounded cable not a ribbon one as these look ugly, take up room and are generally rubbish.

If you bought the motherboard in the retail box then it probably has all of the cables you need.
