I am a Mac user that has been pampered by Apple for the last 9 years.
I have decided to step outside of the box and use windows and build my own PC. Something new.
I had an old PC sitting in my garage, and I thought I might be able to buy a few pieces of hardware and have somewhat decent computer.
I started by tearing apart the whole computer and photographing the parts. The photos are hear if you can find a few moments to take a look.

Did I sort this correctly?
Valuable:
Chasis: I Can put a new motherboard in it. Will all motherboards fit in this chasis?
Video Card: I don't play games so I don't need a good video card.
Ethernet: Valuable. Ethernet is ethernet.
Audio Card: I won't be recording music on it, so I don't need a good audio card until I decide to record music.
HeatSync: Perhaps I can use the same heatsync?
USB Cord port thing: perhaps I can plug this into my new motherboard and have some more USB ports?

Trash:
RAM: one says "256MB" on it. Certainly not worth anything.
Phone Modem: Dial up? Fax? definitely a trash item.
Phone Modem: OK why the hell is there two of these? to the trash with them.
Processor: I need as much CPU as I can get
Motherboard: Probably does not support new Intel i7 Processors, and the ps2 connection makes me want to break it
FloppyDrive: how much do they hold? 1 mb 4 mb?

hmm, inless you are looking for the experience of building a computer i wouldnt recommend trying to save this one. you can get a decent home computer for around $600. bascially in that computer, the ONLY thing that is save-able is the case. EVERYTHING else is out of date, even the case, i dont know if mother boards today will fit in it.

I agree with Sean. I don't see much of a reason to try to salvage anything.

Will the motherboard and Chasis fit together on this setup?
Are all the power supplies the same?

But I would not know which motherboard to get for it.
Does the motherboard have a huge impact on performance?

I really can't save the $200 bucks and make due on that old video card for a while?

hey man, wow, good job on that list... only thing thats a lil over kill is the power supply, but its good to have more than you need. it almost seems like you know what you are doing haha.

No... but you chose a relitivley high end graphics card. the computer you listed out is a mid to entry level high end gaming machine.

you could go with a radeon 4870 or even a 5750 and save some money right there.

clearly in the future I am going to want to put a new Processor in it.
If I buy a higher end motherboard will it last longer, and potentially work with more processors?

or do I basically always have to buy a new motherboard when I buy a new processor?

Since you've chosen the P55 motherboard, you will have to use processors that are LGA1156. Intel will make the 1156 model for several years, so your ability to upgrade should last for quite a long time. At some point, it may require a BIOS upgrade for you motherboard in order to upgrade to a newer cpu, but that's far down the road.
