Is it possible to take old computers and use the processors to make a multi core computer?

A multi-core processor is one with multiple cores on the same physical die. Examples of this are the Core 2 series of processors from Intel, or the Phenom processors from AMD.
You can have up to two separate physical processors in the same computer, but it requires a special motherboard and they need to be identical, so it isn't really a viable solution for most users.
