Tom's Hardware do a very good round up of available cards every month - here is the link to the latest:

You don't necessarily have to spend huge amounts to get the best available graphics performance. For example, if you are only playing on a 22" monitor (1680x1050 resolution) then a GTX 260 will offer excellent performance on every modern game.
For the price you suggested though, I would concur with TH and say that the new ATI 5850 is probably your best bet, but they are quite hard to find at the moment.

They sure do push SLI/Crossfire. I'm just not sold on it yet. Are you?

Well, I think if you have a larger monitor then it certainly has its place, but I would usually recommend sticking with a single card.

Messed up in what way? The 8800GT is still a very good card, so should be more than capable of handling most modern games on decent settings. Try downloading and installing the latest drivers and see if this makes a difference.
