This is my first build, and it is still incomplete. Seem to have gotten to this point fine with the instructions in Rob's book, but can't install Windows XP... so maybe not fine.

components:
1. Sonata Antec III with 500w power supply
2. GA-G41M-ES2L motherboard with boxed Intel pentium dual-core processor chip and cpu fan
2b. 4mb Kingston ram, speed compatible with motherboard and processor
3. Western Digital Caviar Green sata 640gb hard drive
4. Liteon dvd/cd combo r/w sata drive, used atapi
5. Windows XP home with service pack 2 in retail box-- comes on a cd

There is no floppy, since Windows came on a cd. There are no IDE/Pata drives, since the pata connector on the motherboard doesn't seem to work. (Ide ribbon cables plugged into mobo come partially loose on one side, so connection to any drive is bad. Tried this with more than one ribbon cable before going to two sata drives.)

System comes up, all the way to complaining about boot failure, insert disk in cd/dvd drive.

The cmos bios menu is a little different than Rob's examples, so maybe that is not set quite correctly?

The WD drive is recognized as channel 0 master with 640 gb. The atapi optical drive is recognized as channel 1 master with no size specifications. The first, second, and third boot sequences are set to cdrom. The Liteon atapi combo drive accepts the windows cd, closes, but nothing launches.

Or does this system need a cdrom drive for windows to install? Or drivers on a floppy or something? Since there is no software nor drivers governing the combo drive or hard drive, this could make sense.

Or what? Sigh. am totally clueless here

Have you tried starting with the CD already in the drive?

Will try that, thank you. Appreciate the help.
