I've been reading about how quad is the future and how duo is still good enough, I understand how duo will be faster and that quad can multi task better but when I started looking at some prices I was a bit confused.

duo E8400 3.0ghz fsb1333 $167
quad Q8400 2.66ghz fsb 1333 $185
quad Q6600 2.4ghz fsb1066 $200

I just gotta be missing/misunderstanding something, why is Q6600 more $$$ than Q8400 when the Q8400 seems better per the above facts??? I at least feel I understand why the E8400 is priced where it is, and I'm using that as a reference point for the Q's.

Thanks,
Seems every time I think I might know something I find I don't know again.

The Q6600 is quite old now, so they don't see any point in reducing the price. Plus it is well renowned as being an excellent overclocker - people have managed to get 4GHz on air with it! As such, it still offers good bang for buck for system builders and overclockers. In addition, the Q6600 has 8MB of L2 cache (super fast memory) while the Q8400 only has 4MB. While you can increase the FSB and clock speed of the Q6600 to match those of the Q8400, you cannot increase the available cache.

Then again, for $20 more you can get the Q9550 which will blow all of them away. :D

That's the point I was going to make. The Q9550 is the way to go.

On the Q6600, it's all supply and demand.

Actually, if you can find it, the Q6700 is usually a lot cheaper than the Q6600 and has a higher stock clock speed as well. I've just bought one for $150 brand new. :D

Well, it was £130, but we in the UK pay a huge premium on electronic goods, so it would probably be available for about $150 for you guys. :(

Many Thanks Guys

I can't seem to find the q6700 for $150 but that would be a great deal for me, and put me dollars to performance right where I would like to be. The best I saw it for was $180 from a superbiz ??? alittle afraid to buy from a lesser known Co. Newegg's $200. I'm amazed how much you guys know and I'm glad your willing to share it.

Thanks for all your help on this
and all the other posts.
