Hello all
I've been reading this site on n off for about 2 years. This would be my 1st build not including the one I made from junk found on the curb- it actually works but old stuff- LOL. My now 9 year old PC is having issues, so time to replace it. Still on the fence about building it, I feel I can put it together but might end up with a pile of software goo. I'm not a gamer anymore when I use the PC I'll have a couple of quicktime short movies open(30seconds worth from camera baseball stuff) and word document for notes and a couple of internet windows for add'l research. So here's what I got:

mobo: gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R LGS775 $115
CPU: E8400 2 DUO 3.0GHZ 775 $170
GPU: ???? $150
RAM: G SKILL BLK 4 GB 2x2 DDR 800PC26400 $45
HD: WD BLK WD6401 640GB 32 MB SATA $80
DVD: LG BLK 22X (NEWEGG #6827136152) $25
PWR: CORSAIR 650TX $100 TOTAL $$$ 685

question -do I get a cooler for $40 or just increase cpu
to a Q9400 and possible get cooler later if ever. I'll
use XP, yes I know ram limited to 3, and I have an old case to reuse. I will some day move up to vista but not for a while, 1year. I'ld like to stay around the $700 price. The "p" version of this mobo just seemed alittle overkill b/c I don't think I'll need to xfire the gpu. Is the power to high 650 or OK? I would consider seeing if I could get TV on the PC so I could record some shows but I don't want to drive myself crazy all at once.

any and all help would be appreciated

The stock cooler should do just fine as long as you're not overclocking the processor. For a video card, you might consider the Radeon HD 4850, or an Nvidia GTS250. You might also consider DDR2 1066 ram. It's about the same price as the DDR2 800, but should perform a little better. The power supply will be more than enough.

Thanks Ricky
Would anyone recommend increasing the CPU to the Q9400 for an extra $45?
Or will the E8400 work? and any guess how long before the E8400 would need to be updated?

Due to sickness I was out of it for a while. I started reading mobo manual, neweggs reviews-great place to find some help on issues with your exact mobo and of course here. So I started building it all on paper and ended up with this:

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX 110
CORSAIR 650TX ATX12V 100
E8400 2 duo 3.0ghz l2 775 65 165
corsair dominator 1066 5-5-5-15 2x2gb pc2 8500 approved 85
evga 512 p3 n841 ar geforce 8800gts 512mb 256bit gddr3 110
WD Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB 75
LG BLACK 25
total 670
REBATES -65
net 605

How does this look. especially the vidio card. I tried to get parts alot of peeps bought it simply made sence, the more likely someone would have the sytem/part the better my chance to get help. I'm sure its all old school to pro's out there. XPsp1,32. I have case, monitor samsung p2070,keybroad&mouse.

Thanks

Everything looks good.
That's a fine video card, but if you don't mind spending another $30, this would be a much better card.
