RAID or NON RAID?

Can anyone explain what is RAID and would it is the benifit of useing RAID?

Thank you for the very helpful links. I have no further questions after reading all of that. I believe I am pretty clean on what it is and how it works. I believe I would like to set up my comp with RAID 0+1 when I get some extra cash. The ability to have proformace and reliability is what I was looking for.
