Is it really needed? I mean as long as i'm touching a metal surface while dealing with the componets, i should be fine right? I know they are only like $5, but still, is it really a 5$ i need to spend?

I don't use one. You just have to be very careful.

Just make sure that you touch an unpainted metal part of your case after you move around and before you touch a component and you should be fine.

Thats what i thought, and is there anyway to tell if you did fry it, besides noticing that it doesn't work. Any physical change or easy way to test it (besides putting in a computer)

Hello folks. I have a similar question. I just bought the anti static wrist strap, and am building my first PC. What do I connect the wrist strap clip lead to? The mother board? The case? Ground connection on an AC outlet? I'm installing the cpu, ram, etc. right now.
Thanks in advance for any input from you experienced builders.

You can clip the strap to the case, or something ground like a radiator.

An unpainted part of the case should be fine though.
