I want to build a new comp. The comp he suggests on the first page here looks good but I was wondering if I could make these changes and have it still work.

This Processor:

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - $294
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

One of these motherboards: (please tell me which would be best for this setup)

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - $298
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128362

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard -$259
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128374

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - $209
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128375

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-EXTREME LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - $328
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128361

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-DS4 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - $244
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128366

Or any good suggestions that will work with i7 and the rest of the setup.

Otherwise mostly the same as on first page here:

Case:

Antec Sonata III 500 Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply - $119
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129024

or should I go with

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

if I go with the second one what power supply should I get? If I go with the first one will I have enough space/cooling/power for this setup? I am more concerned about space (as in having plenty) and cooling than silence btw.

Video card:

EVGA 896-P3-1265-AR GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - $279

cd drive:

Sony NEC Optiarc 20x IDE DVD RW/CDRW (Black) - $23
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118011&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-CD/DVD+Burners+(RW+Drives)-_-Sony+NEC+Optiarc+America+Inc-_-27118011

Ram: Will figure it out, although open to suggestions.
Mouse/keyboard:Already have
Monitor: Already have
OS: Already have
Hard drive: Already have

So, would this all work? Should I go with a different part somewhere?
This whole setup, minus the stuff I already have, should cost me from $1000-$1200. If you can suggest a better setup for that price or less please let me know. Keep in mind that I don't need top o the line but I do want it to be able to play all the new games for a few years. I probably won't be able to afford a new setup for at least 3-4 years after this and I want to stay as on top of things as possible without going completely broke. In case it matters, I use my comp mostly for games, downloading and watching HD videos, and some video editing. Also, I may overclock the processor a bit because I hear that the i7 overclocks well. Oh, and will that video card be good enough for games over the next couple years?

Thank you very much for any info.
Matthew

PS I am a noob when it comes to forums, so if I made any mistakes or posted in the wrong place or anything like that please forgive me.

You'll probably get a few responses on this one, but here's my take:

1) As for the MOBO, go with the first one you listed (-UD5)

2) As for memory, you need DDR3 for the X58 chipset, so I'd recommend this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145224

3) For the case, I think you should go with the 900, but mostly becasue the PSU in the Sonata III will be a little short of what you need. I'd suggest this PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256045

I think it's going to run you close to $1,500 when you add it all up. The key point here is that once you step up to an X58 board, you have no choice but to pay the DDR3 premium. If you step back (and I say that lightly :p) to X48 (like say this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131284), you are back in DDR2. Most people expect DDR3 to start coming down in 2009, but for now it's still pricey. But once you decide to go with a DDR2 mobo, upgrading in 2 years becomes more than just a new video card.

PS. You should also consider a better cpu cooler for a beefy rig like that, regardless of which way you go.

@chunkylover53

Good suggestions. Just the kind of info I'm looking for. Thank you.

I take it then that this setup will all work/fit together. This is my first real build btw. Besides frankensteining some old systems together that is.

I agree with Chunky.

That's a great video card you have listed, but I'm not sure it will fit in the Sonata III case. The 900 would be fine. Take a look at the Corsair 750TX power supply.

I deleted your double post too.

Very similar to the build I am about to complete. Just have the mobo and processor left to order. I am also new to building comps and have asked these guys for alot of help. If you dont have one or one hasnt been recommended to you. This is the power supply I got. It got awesome reviews in PC Magazine as well as on Newegg. Its also at an AWESOME price right now. It should have more than enough power to do what you want. Its also rated for SLI incase you ever wanna do that. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341011

Good Luck!
