I've upgraded several machines before, but this is my first build. I will use this build for heavy multi-tasking, running several programs that use a lot of memory, but I won't be gaming.

I know the case and power supply are overkill, but they're what I want. Does the processor usually come with thermal compound for attaching the heatsink, or do I have to get that separately?

That's a terrific build.

Add Vista Home Premium 64-bit to take advantage of all that ram (and more).

Thermal compound will come with the processor.
