View Full Version : Tiny Build

The Intel Atom processor really seems to be taking off -- the ASUS Eee and MSI Wind are selling in large numbers. The AMD Geode is another (and the original) specialty/embedded processor.

I think that it would be helpful to have another "suggested build" sticky that focuses on the "tiny build." The average computer user generally does the following:
1. Edit "Office" documents
2. Email
3. Use "multimedia" files (movies, pictures, music)
4. Play Flash games

I found that a full-featured tiny computer could be built for about $250-300US on newegg.

Here's my updated Budget Build.

Case/PSU - Antec NSK 4480B w/380watt psu $80
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 5000 $60
MOBO - Gigabyte GA MA78GM-S2H $80
GPU - EVGA 512-P3-N971 9800GT Dual Slot $100
Ram - A-DATA 2gb (2x1gb) DDR2 800 $32
HD - Western Digital Caviar SE16 320gb $60
Optical - Samsung SHS-S223Q $27

Total $439

Plenty of room for upgrades. All prices came from Newegg on 10/24/08.
If you're not a gamer, you could shave off a lot of money with a much cheaper video card, like a 8500GT for $35.

Ah... While that's still $150-300 more than it could cost to build a computer based on the Atom processor, it would be much more powerful and (more importantly) upgradeable.

Someone could definitely work with that and tweak it to save off $100 or so, too.

Doesn't that MOBO have onboard graphics? If your not a gamer, do you need a graphics card at all?
