I am trying to install a hard drive on my amd athalon computer (1992 model).

I have one gray wire that came loose...that may or may not be my problem. I replaced it in the section where your faq shows the 5 wires going. I tried turning it both ways...no difference. It may not even go there.

Here is the long error sequence I get:
trap: 0000000D GP Fault
Tr = 0028 cr0= 00000011 cr2=00000000 cr3=00000000
cs: eip=008:00420150 ss:esp- 0010:00061fec
errcode=13c0
flags 00010016 no cyl no zr intdis down trapdis
eax=0000114 ebx=004013b1
ecx=00001618 edx= 534d0040 ds= 0010 es=0010
edi=0047164f esi=00051d68
ebp= 00016ff0 cr= 00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

The above is after the memory test, the failed floppy drive, the list of all attached hard drives (3) & dvd read write drive.

I have 1 gig of memory, and using Win Xp sp2.

Any ideas?

I think the motherboard may be gone. All was fine until my GDat decided she didn't like being locked out of the system...which is why I ordered a 3rd drive...the original was having problems after I got back in and fixed what she messed up.

Marge, it has been two days since your thread was written. Is the status the same, do you still need help, etc.? I will try to help you within my limited experience. I am pretty good at fixing things technical but my computer experience is limited to my first build and what I learn from this forum.

I will ask you a lot of questions about what you have done, etc.. First I need to know if you are still looking for help, your time zone, and the time frame you can devote to this. Did you build this computer or purchase it as a finished item?

Have you been following a "certain anti-static protocol" or not? Please be direct in your answer.

Next, newer computers support multiple sata hard drives and few IDE (Pata) hard drives. Pata drives require large 20 pin or more connectors, sata drives, I think, seven pins. If you are on your third hard drive, tell me what the other two hard drives are!! Sata or Pata -- look at the cables and plugs at the back of each drive. Pata -- large long connector. Sata, small connector, about 3/4" wide.

What is the brand and catalog number of the new third hard drive?

Do you know the type motherboard and model number in your computer; there should be a lable on the mobo visible just by looking into the cabinet at the mobo!! I suggest you do not go sticking your hand in the cabinet without knowing you are following a strict anti-static protocol, ok?

The above is "a shotgun approach to just getting started, just trying to define the landscape, etc,". Others on the forum can and will, I hope, contribute as we move along. Your turn!!!
