i'm in the process of upgrading one of my pc's. it currently has a evga 7800GT OC card. the new mobo supports sli. i can get another 7800 for $50 or less. would this be a worthwhile upgrade or would i be better off with a single, faster card?

Really does depend on what your budget is, but it will be better to purchase a new faster card. A ~$200 price range for graphics cards usually have the best price versus performance ratio at this point in time. If your motherboard supports both nvidia and ati cards, I'd suggest:
ATI HD4850 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=HD4850&x=24&y=30) and HD4870 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=HD4870)
or
nVidia 9800GTX+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+106792522+1067942261&Configurator=&Subcategory=48&description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&Order=BESTMATCH&srchInDesc=&Tpk=9800GTX%2b)
Both cards style can be used in SLI or CrossFire, so their good long term investments; should you need more performance power in future, you can always purchase another one and hook them up as so. One of either of these though will be far more than enough to supplement the general operation of a mid-range gaming computer, and you wont need to upgrade for a long time unless you're going to be playing modern FPS games in high resolutions.
