Can't see disk in My Computer"

I insert a CD into ROM and when I go to My Computer it doesn't detect the disk.

Also, when I hook up my MP3 player to the USB it doesn't show it in My Computer even though I get a message that says that an external device was detected (bottom right of screen).

How can I fix this?

Does the USB device not show up even after the message in the bottom right says "Your device is now ready to use"?
