View Full Version : Single vs. Multi Rail Power Supplies

Is it better to buy a single or multi rail power supply if the wattage is the same? There are a number of highly-rated supplies that have "single rail; no manual load balancing" as one of the features. I've seen ~50 on a single +12v line and ~40 split across multiple +12v lines. The single rail would obviously provide more power in this instance. However, could it be possible to not be able to power something if it draws more power than one line on power supply with multiple +12v lines?

Is this a real feature or is it something like SLi where it's more of a gimmick than anything else? I like the idea of not having to watch how much I have on each rail each time I add something to my computer...

This would be especially helpful when upgrading the video card or processor.
