XP Service Pack 3 question

I've heard that if you have a computer with an AMD processor, you might have to run a registry hack before installing SP3 or else your computer might enter into a continuous reboot after restarting. Is this true? I'd like to know because the laptop I just got for college has an AMD processor >.<

Try your laptop first and see if it works OK, but you may need to replace it/install XP without SP3.

So, is SP3 basically all of the previous updates put into one package? Is there anything in SP3 that cannot be obtained individually through windows update?
