Although I am hesitant to attempt to build a computer I do have the desire to do so and would appreciate comments on the compatibility of my proposed build:

Antec Sonata III (w/500 W Power Supply) (already purchased from buy.com through Google checkout for $99 incl. shipping)
Abit IP35 Pro (now at Newegg w/ $50. mail in rebate through 6/6/08)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale
EVGA GE Force 9600 GT 512 MB (now at Newegg w/ $10. mail in rebate through 5/31/08)
WD Caviar SE 16 640 GB SATA
Lite-On 20X DVD Burner LH-20AIL-06
Samsung Internal Floppy Drive
Corsair XMS2 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) (now at Newegg w/ $25. rebate through 5/31/08)
Microsoft Vista 32-bit Home Premium OEM
Arctic Cooling Thermal Compound

I do not do any gaming but I do a certain amount of home photo and video editing. I was looking at Dell and elsewhere for a newer home computer when the local newspaper technobuddy suggested your site and encouraged laymen to take a stab at building their own.

I already own a 22" LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Do I need to add a sound card? I currently have 5.1 speakers that I could use.

Do I need to add a cooler, such as the Zalman CNPS9500?

Thanks for your help.

That's a terrific setup. You don't really need the Zalman cooler, nor the Artic Silver TIM. The stock HSF on the E8400 is more than adequate.

You can do this.:)
