Hi Rob, nice site!

I've tried a couple websites (newegg, and something else) by looking at and selecting what seems to be necessary for building my own computer. Then I took that final price and still could not beat the price for the Gateway FX530XM (found on Gateways site, naturally, for about 1499) which includes a nice monitor as well.

I know very little about computers so a family friend has been helping. He encourages me to 'build' the computer, but the Gateway still looks a great (and maybe greatER) deal. What would you suggest? I use the computer for work also (so about 8 hours a day going through the internet, making changes to our site, emailing, etc).

Thank you in advance for any help you give. Have a great night!

Jeff

Hi! Thanks for the good words.

Have you read my post on this topic?

I'm not familiar with the Gateway model you mention, but chances are you can build the same or better computer for the same or less money. But see my post.

Thanks for the info Rob. Would anyone mind giving me a ballpark figure of how much it might cost to build a computer with 2+ gigs of RAM, 300+ GB Harddrive, XP office or Vista Premium+, a good video and sound card, and 2ghz with a 19+ inch LCD monitor, etc? You can see the first post in this thread to see the Gateway computer I'm comparing it to. Have a great day! -Jeff

You can add up the cost of the components from the recommendations on my home page.
