Video card Memory shared?

As you may already know yesterday my dad's computer died and well he is looking at getting a computer rather than having me build him one. So, I am trying to look for bad things that come in these prebuilt computers.

So in the process of doing this I was looking at the size of video card memory and it said "224 MB (shared)". So what does it mean by "(shared)" video card memory?

I suspect it means the memory is shared with the mainboard system memory (RAM). That's a bad thing in terms of performance.

That's what I thought it meant and yeah I agree that would suck!
