I have the e8400. Running Core Temp shows readings around 45-48 degrees under no load. Running a program called Real Temp shows about 10 degrees lower. I have seen some detailed technical explanation suggesting that Real Temp is right. Anyone else understand or can advise?

Even if the Real Temp readings are correct, then your CPU is still running quite hot. Have you overclocked it at all?

If not, try re-seating the CPU fan. What I mean by this is take the fan off, clean all the thermal paste off, re-apply the paste and then re-attach the fan.

What temp should it be at? I do question whether I got the $%@*^# stock cooler correctly seated.

It really depends on your case and the ambient temperature. Ideally, you would want it to idle at around 25-30C.
