Yup, then follow the directions to re-format and install windows. Also, be sure that you have the recovery CD with the motherboard drivers, or download them from the PC mfr's site before you start. Once you re-install, you will need to do windows updates and re-install drivers for all of your peripherals. If you don't have the drivers handy for your on-board LAN and can't connect, it will slow down the process of recovery.
PS. Your gonna love it. Just for fun before you do it, go ahead and time how long it takes from the time you start your PC until the time when you can start opening programs in Windows without delay. Then time it again after your done. It's usually pretty amazing.

My problem is a bit different.
My mom got a PC assembled by some shop. He installed XP (pro) but when i tried to update i found it to be pirated and Microsoft wouldn't allow update. there are plenty of registry errors and malfunctions. I will be getting a genuine XP Home in a day or two.
How do I install without erasing other programmes on the C drive?
If it cannot be installed on C: there are two partitions on her 80GB disc - 20 is C: and 60 is E: . Can the genuine XP be installed on the E: drive and still work normal?
Mom is nearing 70 and do not want to complicate things for her.
thanks
