So I ordered all of my parts and everything has got here except for my E8400 processor which now the website tells me it may not be here until april sometime. I want to build my computer so I know if everything is actually working in case i have to send stuff back. I am thinking to cancel my E8400 from the random site and order an E6850 from newegg since its similar in performance. Good idea?
This is basically the same

See what others say about it.

Yeah, I agree with bean. I think the consensus is that the E6850 is not really the comparable model to the E8400. The 6850 is a 65nm chip, which is going to run a little hotter and consume more power than the e8400 which is 45nm.
The Xeon that bean gave you links to is widely thought of as being the exact same chip as the e8400, and I haven't heard anyone here disagree yet.

Ok thanks :) but the E6850 will still give me a pretty sweet gaming computer right? I pretty much play cod4 and wow.
I'm not a gamer so I'll leave that to others.
The e6850 has a 4mb L2 compared with the 6mb of the Xeon and wolfdale. That may slow it some.
Also, costs $40 more than the Xeon. I don't know if you'll need a better cpu fan being it is the older 65 architecture.
Not sure how far this will OC compared with the 4 plus of the wolfdales.

The E8400 and the E6850 are basically the same, in fact the E6850 is probably better.
It is a better overclocker, doesn't suffer compatibility problems with motherboards, the E8400 is only slightly cooler and the E6850 only uses a tiny bit more power.
65nm isn't stoneage technology lol
If you can get the E6850 for the same price or less, go for it.
I beleive this is you MOBO.
So it will work fine.

OK Jamie, given the choice and assuming availability at these prices, which would you choose?
