It's cheaper than the 8800gts but it has 64 stream processors compared to 128 on the 8800's. I am definately not an expert; but I think more is better if you can get close to the same clock and bit count. Of course those equal more cost.

Its a lot cheaper than the 8800 series, so I think that the 9600 is more of a budget card as opposed to a gamers choice. However, I expect the 9800s to be good when they come out. :)

They are the next budget/mid range cards, lot cheaper than the 8800GT.

The 9800GX2 is due out very soon.

Do the numbers an letters on video cards series mean something specific, or are they simply ID marks?

1. The first number indicates the general series, e.g. 8xxx, 9xxx.
2. The second number indicates the model range - higher is better e.g. 8600, 8800
3. Any letters after the numbers indicate the specific model - for nVidia, Ultra>GTX>GTS>GT, usually e.g. 8800 GT, 8800 GTS

So they are just a way of easily keeping track of what type of card you are getting. :)

The good thing about this is that the 3870 and the 3850's prices are going down.
3870- from 245 to 190
3850- from 200 to 170 (I think)
Hopefully the 8800gt's prices will go down in response to that :P.

So, is it the hundreds that are important?

Or; Why is 8800 more expensive (and I guess; better) than 9600? Because there's something in the 800 aspect that isn't in the 600?

Well, the the 9600 is essentially just like 8800gt but they just reduce some stuff to make it cheaper. (they also called it 9600 but it's just like the 8800)

Here are links two the two types:

8800GTS:

9600GT:

The main difference between the two is the lowered stream processors count. This is however apparently an important thing in gaming so more is better... I have not looked in this much so I cannot give a more detailed explaintion at this time.

They are very good apparently, and at almost $50 cheaper than an 8800GT, i think they are well worth it.

Reviews are good http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/21/nvidia_geforce_9600_gt/
