View Full Version : Sound Driver Installation Failure on P5KC

Too good to be true? I finally got my replacement P5KC up and running, and now that Windows is installed, I have no sound. I downloaded the latest drivers from the ASUS website, and I get the message "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure!!" each time. I tried the the older driver on the CD, and I get the same message. The weird thing is that the funky audio tests for the REALtek orange speaker in the system tray play fine, but WAV files in Windows will not play. Any suggestions?

Well, I installed the ms bus, and still no sound. Thanks for the help, anyway. I'll keep plugging away and see what else I can figure out. If nothing else, I'll just go buy a $30 soundblaster and disable the onboard audio. After all I've been through with the motherboard, I'm sure not doing another RMA if I can avoid it!

Wierd, my audio worked fine as soon as I loaded drivers. Did you install Sp2 yet?

Yep, and all Windows updates. Also did newest mobo drivers. Have not upgraded the BIOS yet. Still not sure how. I downloaded the ROM file from ASUS and put it on a floppy, but it wouldn't boot--told me it was a non-system disk.

Did you format the disk to make it bootable? Page 4-4 in the p5kc manual.
I actually did it right from windows using the asus update utility on page 4-1.
Update the bios and then re-install all of the drivers again. Let us know if sound comes up.

Well I'm a right nitwit. I forgot the CD came with a Windows updating utility! I'm trying to download the BIOS update with it right now. We'll see...

I updated to the newest version of the BIOS, but I still get the same error message just when it looks like the driver is about to complete installation. This sucks.

Reboot into the bios and double check that the onboard audio device is set to enabled. Page 4-24 in the manual.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to wait until the cavalry logs in tomorrow and has a chance to diagnose. I really think it's a driver issue and not a hardware issue, since you are getting sound during the tests. Keep moving forward!

Yep, it's enabled. Hopefully Jamie and the Monkey have some advice. Thanks, guys.

Hmm...
This is quite weird really, but it doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem. It seems as if one solution is to re-install Windows, and then load the drivers on one-by-one i.e. do the audio driver first, then reboot, then do the LAN drivers and so on. This sucks, I know, especially after you've had so much trouble with the board already.

Installed AVG just now. I haven't done any tweaking of settings or looked into overclocking any components yet. I need to get all the free system-monitoring utilities. But I've updated the 8800GT drivers, so I think I'm going to install KOTOR and take a look at it on highest settings, then hit the hay. I'm exhausted!

I did read it, and I was thinking about doing the reinstall the night before, but I thought I should spend the day looking for actual driver fixes from ASUS or Realtek first. I appreciate the help, prime. You had me at "hello". ;)
