I built my first computer and the build went fine. The first boot worked but from there I have had nothing but problems. I finally got windows VISTA64 to start and now I get a blue screen with the following message:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical informaiton:
*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8000085E251,
0xFFFFF98000C1CE58,0xFFFFF98000C1C830)

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?

SetUp:
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
AMD X64 6400+
Corsair XMS 4GB 800
EVGA 8800 GTS SSC 640MB
WD 500GB HDD
Lite-On DVD-RW
Windows VISTA 64

Thanks for any help!

The "alleged" solutions for this are numerous. I am having the same error message as you, and I have a similar build.

1. Re-seat your ram and video card. Make sure everthing is securely connected.

2. Update to the latest driver for the video card from Nvidia.com which should be 169.21. Use Driver Sweeper before installing.

3. Also check Nvidia's site for all Microsoft Hotfixes. Also check Microsoft for all Windows updates.

4. Check in BIOS and see how many volts are set for the ram. If it defaults to 1.8 you may need to bump it up to 2.0 or 2.1.

5. You didn't list your power supply. There are some known issues with some Antec power supplies and 8800 series cards.

I hope that helps some. After I bumped up my ram voltage, my problem stopped. It could be any or all of these issues.

Post back and tell us how its working out.

I am confused. How do I reset the voltage on my RAM? I have been looking thru the BIOS for an hour and I do not see this to be an option. Thanks for any help you can provide.

There should be a power management section in BIOS. Look here...

Try googling the term "Blue Screen of Death".

Anyway, I have a different setup, but I got BSOD repeatedly until I updated the BIOS. Then, no more.

I tryed many different things to get rid of the BSOD but in the end I removed half of my RAM and the CPU is working fine! I guess I had a bad stick of RAM. I will have to see if I can send it back for a replacement.
