i am ordering new e8400 and an artic freezer 7. now when they get here and i am installing the fan will i need some thermal paste. i know the cpu usually has some already on but will it come with the fan already installed too, and i have to take it off and reapply??? or is the stuff already applied good enough?

You will need to thorougly clean the CPU before installing the fan - make sure that all of the thermal grease is removed from the CPU heatsink.

The stuff that comes pre-applied to the AF7 is good, so you don't need to worry about changing it.

so what ur saying is that the cpu and af7 both come with pre-applied thermal grease and to take the grease off cpu and just use af7???

Nope. The AF7 comes with thermal compound and the stock HS comes with thermal compound. The CPU comes bare but you should clean it before installing the HS. I used the pre-applied compound on the AF7.

The pre-applied grease is even better than AS5.

Clean the CPU with neat alcohol or a special cleaner.

So if I don't have rubbing alcohol handy, I can use vodka?:)

HAHAHAHA

So Boba how goes things, I have not seen any posts from you since you RMA'ed your motherboard. Have you gotten the new one, have you set up your computer yet, does the new p5kc work this time?

I'm still impatiently waiting for the replacement. It is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. It's been languishing in Iowa since Friday.

Damn I guess we both got screwed,

I was going to build my computer this weekend, but it turns out my processor will not arrive until tomorrow.

Hope all goes well for you and me, I have the same processor and motherboard as you. And if it does not work after they put that damn sticker on the box saying it will work, I will be super pissed.

Using Vodka is not as funny as it sounds, it actually works pretty well.

Consider it done. My wolfdale will be well "lubricated".

Don't use vodka - its only about 38% alcohol, so you will get lots of impurities on the processor, which is not a good idea.

Seriously, get some specialist stuff, its really not that expensive...

Yeah, its pretty cheap to buy a cleaner.

But i have used Vodka and it does work well, one thing though is it smears, if you have nothing else to hand its a good alternative to manufactured cleaners or neat alcohol.

Some of the folks at extremesystems.org also swear by the stuff if you don't have anything else, and the knowledge of some guys there puts me too shame, not many though ;)

Meh, fair enough then, but I'd suggest playing safe when you've just spent loads on a shiny new processor... :)

Of course, but when your eager to build........you know, don't want to be hanging around for cleaner to arrive.

Boba, the link WM posted to the AS Cleaning kit, its really good stuff, i mean excellent, so you may want to put an order in while your waiting on your motherboard.

I guess I'm just more cautious than you. :)

Plus I always have a bottle lying around the place if I need it, but that comes from years of computer building. Looking around my room now, I can see a set of non-magnetic screwdrivers, some spare computer case screws, some AS5, some TIM (the remover), an anti-static wrist strap and several toothbrushes for cleaning CPUs... maybe I should tidy up a bit? :D

Lol i guess, but when you have been building so long, you can rely on your confidence in things, plus i am always eager to try out a new method of cleaning a CPU :p with Vodka you can clean with it and take a swig at the same time :D

Don't even go there with the things lying around your room, i can beat it :D CPUs, motherboards, several cases, tools, wristbands, motherboard testing equipment.

I really need to ebay some of my stuff :o

I don't have any of that because I give all my old computer stuff to my parents - whenever I upgrade my computer, I upgrade theirs with all my old parts. :)

OK, I'm stopping on my way home to pick up some rubbing alcohol. When I clean the old goo off my processor and cooler, I was planning to use a q-tip and the alcohol to clean off the thermal paste, and wear rubber gloves to keep from getting too much oil and other stuff on either component. Any problems with this plan?

(I'll be drinking the vodka later if my replacement mobo doesn't work any better than the first one).

I'm just looking forward to you posting your successful first boot in a few hours.:D

A q-tip could potentially leave cotton on the surface. I prefer a lint-free cloth.

i read somewhere that u can use a coffee filter too if u dont have lint free cloth

What kind of toothbrush do you use?

Just a cheap one I bought from the local drug store - cost 99p (about $2). :)
