View Full Version : If I remove the heatsink/cooler to examine my cpu...

Will I damage the thermal paste layer that came on the cooler? I have a Freezer 7 Pro on an Intel E8400 cpu. My ASUS mobo is giving me no beeps or video signal on boot. I've removed RAM and vid card, and still get no error beeps. I guess the next step is to check the processor for damage (not that I'd know what to look for). If I remove the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7, will I have to buy extra thermal paste to apply before I reattach it and try another boot?

Thanks.

Dude... It's a slow night on the forums, and I know if I were on your end I'd be tempted to pull that cooler off and look too, but I wouldn't do it until you hear from one of the long timers on this forum.

To be honest I think if you pull it off now you'll need to re-apply new thermal compound, which includes cleaning the processor and bottom of the heatsink fan with alcohol before you apply the new stuff.

Take a breath and/or a walk, and wait for the cavalry...

Yes you will need to apply new thermal paste, however i guarantee there is no problem with your CPU.
