View Full Version : How soon do Penryns arrive (should I wait)?

I have been planning to purchase a q6600 in the next 2 weeks or so, but I don't want the price to plummet a few weeks later. I know that's always a risk with computer parts, but I'd like to make the wisest purchase possible. Will I be able to get the 6600 for less in a month, or is it likely to stay in the $280 range for a while?

Thanks!

The Q6600 won't drop in price, like i said in the other thread when you asked why the E6600 was more expensive than the E6750, they will still hold their value.

Personally i would wait if you can, the Penryns should be arriving soon, and they should be a lot better, not to mention a lot cheaper than the current Quads.

Could you define "soon"? If I have to wait a month or two, I can, but I don't want to wait until summer. Thanks again.

Hmm its hard to say, as components usually just appear out of nowhere, but it should be the end of the month.

JN you say wait for the new Penryns. I am trying to research them. I'm looking at the Yorkfield Quads. I understand there are Extreme and non-Extreme versions. The Extremes appear to be uppwards of $1000 while the others will be half the price or less depending on Frequency. Other than frequency, wattage, and price; do you or anyone know what the difference between Extreme and non-Extreme is. Looks like Extreme price to me.

Thanks for your help and knowledge.

Thats a great link, as i predicted, the new Quads ''non-extreme'' will be cheaper than the current Quads and a lot better.

The main difference between the Extreme and non-Extreme CPU's will be the clock speed and FSB, the FSB makes a good bit of difference.

Having said that, the prices for the Qx CPU's are ludicrous, they don't offer enough performance increase to warrant being five times the price.

JN Yes that price borders on extortion if there wasn't to be another option.

I'll wait for the others. Thanks

So then rather than spending $275 now for a Q6600, I should wait and get the Yorkfield Q9300 for $265.

I might have to wait. Damn...I hate waiting.
