Trying to pick out a video card that is capable of playing "crysis," here are 2 I am considering:

EVGA 256-P2-N758-TR GeForce 8600GT SSC 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail ($129.99)

EVGA 512-P2-N738-LR GeForce 8400GS 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Retail ($59.99)

By all indicators (to my untrained eyes) the second one is superior, but costs less. What am I missing here? Are both of these capable of handling crysis? The second one is 512 and the first is 252.

I'm not sure that the 8400 will play Crysis at all, and the 8600 might play with the settings turned down low. Neither card is a good choice for playing Crysis.

You should consider nothing less than the 8800GT if you plan to play a game like Crysis at an enjoyable level.

The 8400 would blow up trying to play Crysis lol.

The 8600 is OK, but its not really a gaming card, well it is but not a very good one.

You should be looking at a 7 series card at least, i saw the 7900GTX on Tigerdirect for $100, now that is the bargain of the century.

OK.........Jamie--------You said that the 7900 GTX is a great buy for $100. So........Would the 7900 be a better choice than the 8600?

The 8800 GT by KFA2 is presently $240. Is this a good brand??

KFA2 GeForce 8800 GT Overclocked Video Card - 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, HDCP, OEM, Video Card
s presently $240. Is this a good brand??

Thats not a brand name i have heard before, but i have seen that card before.

You have to remember ALL 8800GT's are basically the same, the companies manufacture them, stick their sticker on and thats it, they sell them and he price is based on what those companies add on such as lifetime warranties ect.

As long as that has a warranty of 3 years or more, i would say go for it, for an overclocked 8800GT thats a bargain.

OK............I went to Tiger Direct to purchase the 7900 GTX. I typed that number into the search AND, looked around the site. I couldn't find that card. Could you give me any more info?

Jamie.....I know that you get most of the questions and I've wondered how long it took you to amass enough knowledge to be the guru of this forum. AND, I also notice that a lot of people (including myself) ask questions that they could probably get answered just by going back and reading the various posts.
I do remember a comment in the beginning that my build is overkill for someone that is not gaming. I originally ordered the 7600 GT that Rob mentioned for those that weren't concerned with "top level game playing". I was sent the wrong card which offered me the opportunity to change to the 8600 GT that you suggested.
Today I read your mention of the 7900 GTX at Tiger Direct for $100. I couldn't find it on the website and called and spoke with a tech/sales guy that confirmed that he didn't see it either. However---He asked why I would want the 7900 when I could get the 8600 that (according to him) is a much better card. They have the off-brand 8800 GT for $240 (which would end all the questions)........but it only has a one year warranty.
I know that I seem to be going in circles....But now I'm not sure about what I thought I knew.

What a fool, the tech guy is wrong, the 8600GT was initially supposed to be a replacement for the 79XX cards, but it isn't a better card, no way, the lowest card out for the 79XX series, the 7900GS, would run circles around a standard 8600GT.

A 7900GT is more powerful, 7950GT is a lot more powerful, a 7900GTX is much more powerful, then if you look at the 7950GX 2, your talking about a card that is almost as powerful as an 8800GTS.

The card i suggested is no longer for sale on Tdirect for some reason, i don't know why.

I started building computers when i was about 13, and i have been consistently learning ever since, i am now 18, you can never know it all, because new components are forever coming out, its not a problem as i enjoy learning about this stuff lol

Jamie is the guru of the forums? :O

;)

The 7600GT is still a good card - it can play Bioshock for goodness sake - but you are better off with something newer.

The 7900GTX is out of production, so it must have been a one-off that you saw, Jamie.

LOL ;)

Must have been, it was either the 7950GT or the GTX, there are still quite a few floating about out there though, and they usually hold extortionate prices, so $100 is a bargain.

The 7600GT is still a great card, i have one lying about somewhere, i remember when i first got it lol and i thought it was the best card ever

Thanks to everyone for their input. I don't mean to slight anyone by exhaulting Jamie. Fact is, I REALLY wanted to ask how old he was---but, was pretty sure that that might be rude. And, WOW.............I never would've guessed 18. I'm impressed!!!! I won't say that I was thinking around 40ish.
HEY...........even so............while a lot of the regulars here have great input---Jamies seems to be the final word most of the time.......AND, I've noted several people accrediting him for their bad-ass computer using his suggestions. Look at me.......I was just supposed to build a non-gaming rig that would let me surf the net and generally not bog down. But, I've ended up with the Antec 900, quad-core intel, Asus P35KC, & 4 GB Corsair. AND, I've never gamed----------I might as well go for the 8800 GT and quit bothering everyone. THANKS!!!! to everyone

And no problemo, hope the build goes ok.
